weather prognostication or throbbing toe
« on: August 28, 2006, 09:50:28 am »
Ok...as antsy as we all are, does anybody have any scientific data supporting where and when the good snow will be?

Is there some crystal ball, a farmers almanac, a throbbing toe, a weather flow chart, ocean curents, or are we all just crossing body parts and hoping for the best?

East coast snow last year was really hit and miss, very unfortunate. Out west got some big bangs....but constant flights to the snowfalls could end a marriage and a job!

Since I have no feel for projeceted weather patterns,? who out there has some insight?

Thanks,
Gary

NOAA has some interesting charts

http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/90day/

Read a little and you can pick up what the predictions are for your area.

Thank you much...

It's a great site I could use depending on where we'll be skiing.

I wonder what their forcast success rate is...

Seems around here, it's 50/50.

Thanks again,
Gary

Gary:   :-X

IT DOESN'T MATTER.

You can't slide down a mountain covered with predictions.  You can very effectively slide down a mountain that is covered with snow even if it wasn't predicted.

My feeling is that this is going to be a Los Lobos winter, and that all of the Utah and Colorado slopes will be open by Christmas.
Actually, I also think the east is going to have a much better winter this year.  Just a feeling, not a prediction.

Hey Jim....good to hear from you!

Well my friend, planning a ski trip in advance of "snow knowledge" can be a bit nerve racking. Was disappointed at Sugarbush last March with very poor snow conditions.

Still have March plans open this year. Going to wait and SEE where the snow is falling rather than book in advance.

Any chance you could join us at Beaver Creek?

Not sure about Los Lobos but I'll take your "feeling" as WORD!...There, now I can sleep better!!!

What the heck, just give us some white stuff to carver are skis around in.

Best,
Gary

Gary:

Weather report. According to the Farmer's Almanac the winter weather forecast is for much lower than normal temperatures and above normal precip in December, and average January, and below average temperatures and average moisture in February (with the potential for a major storm around President's day.

Now I don't know if the farmer's almanac forecast here is the same as for upstate New York, but they correctly hit last December when they forecast the early season "really cold" spell, but missed some of the later prognostications (I hesitate to use the word prediction, since that sounds more scientific).

Thanks Jim,
All I can say is thank goodness for the snow guns!!!!!

Still, one can hope to get "lucky" on ones ventures to their favorite slide and glide resort.

Wishing all oodles of snow!
