Ouch - "My Ski Hurts"
« on: January 21, 2013, 02:23:03 am »
Just finished a day on the slopes. Beautiful day at 40* but conditions were sketchy with invisible rocks.... :o   Holiday crowd....ugh...Seem ed like I spent more time standing in the lift line or riding it. And my anti-collision control gps was turned to maximum sensitivity. All that said, it was still a great day with the youngin on the slope and gave me a chance to try a new pair of Lange boots.

I say "invisible" because I have absolutely no idea where I picked up a scratch about 3/4 of the length of my ski. The scratch is about 1/4" wide. Depth I would gauge to be between a 16th and 32nd of an inch in the worst places and less in others. However, the scratch itself runs from the contact surface just below the tip to just behind the rear binding. Only on one ski.

Can I get some advice on what to expect in terms of repair options please?

Thx......

My personal approach is don't worry about it until your base edge has been damaged enough to need a flatten and grind. Then do the whole thing. It's not nice to look at, but does it really matter?

What epic said.  That scratch doesn't sound like a big deal.  If there are any base material ("p-tex") curlicues sticking out from the ski, use a metal scraper to shave them off.

If your ski is young, you could also kiss your ski to make it feel better ;D

Once you have a few more scratches, this one won't be so noticeable. Not deep enough to worry about. May have been a pine cone or maybe from the pole of that woman you knocked down and ran over?  :-[

Byron, depending on how nasty the gouge is, I will either ignore it or repair it.  The bad ones I will repair, as they delay the need for a base grind.  Those that go right through the PTEX base and expose the core are mandatory repair.

Repairs are easily done at home, so if at some point you want to start doing this yourself, post back and I can lay out some technique options for you.  As for this new scratch of yours, it's so long that you probably couldn't repair it cleanly even if you wanted to.  It sounds rather shallow, so just do as Todd suggested - shave off any curlies with a steel scraper and go skiing.

As an aside, this has not been a kind season to our bases.  There is so little snow cover that there are stones all over the place that the grooming machines are pulling up to the surface, and all our bases are looking pretty ugly .  Base grinds will be happening for at least 5 pairs after this winter.  Hey, it's part of the cost of having fun.

Sounds like you got some additional structure for free!  Just think of how much money you saved yourself on a grind..

Ok guys...I get it...not a crisis... :D

Epic..will it matter? I ski with such "feel" that I knew immediately..... :o  NOT....alas, probably won't matter and whats worse, I can't really even use it for a good alibi...

ToddW...Your logic is flawed....I inadvertantly tried it....I "kissed" the slope a couple of times yesterday...and it STILL Scratched my ski. Completely unappreciative of my very public display of affection....And no Jim....I wasn't kissing the lady I ran over... ;D

Good to know I am increasing, if not the structure and value, the "personality" of my skis this season.... 8)

BUT have you NAMED your skis yet. Once they know how much you care they will avoid the little stones themselves, in an attempt to retain and maintain the svelte shape and camber that first attracted you.

Well...No I haven't...A conundrum of sorts...They don't have the hour glass sidecut of Gary's Marilyn's.  I fear my skis are similar to my skiing,  like an aesthetically challenged gal at closing time, both look pretty good at a distance. Up close sans an ale or two...not so much.. :(

Nevertheless....the y need love too.....I will have to work on a fetchy name.... ;D

The Doors did it much better!

Hello, I love you
Won't you tell my your name?

Hmm, might be a good tune to listen to while skiing.
