This Season Is History
« on: March 18, 2012, 05:22:46 pm »
Living at the southern edge of eastern skiing, our season typically lasts from mid-December to mid-March. On March 6, I skied my last day, but, did not know that would be the case. The warm weather (70's) just destroyed my home mountain in the last 10 days, it went from being 90% open to a handful of runs, and closed today. I am not a fan of skiing in heavy, wet spring conditions that just suck your skis into the snow.

In years past, my season's end was a very high point and I could say good-bye with a smile on my face. Last season, Pa. got some very nice late snow and the Epic Gathering in Summit Co. was in very late March resulting in a glorious end. This year the ending just makes me feel sad and empty. There is still a dream that maybe Vt. can get some late snow in the next 10 days, but, the weather forecasts continue the high temp. pattern we are in. The season had several rememberable moments, several with friend from this forum, but, I miss the rush that comes with skiing on a classic day knowing that it's the last.

So, farewell to the 11-12 season. May old man winter return next year! Let's keep the posting going pending late fall snow. And, thanks for the memories of skiing and chatting with all over the past months.

Yes, ski season is short and not so sweet this year.
It is very alarming to see flowers and trees in bloom
that normally don't bloom for 5-6 weeks from now.

But, planning for next year is underway.
WHich version of the Epic ski pass?
Big Sky? or Tahoe? as an extra add on?

It is the years like this one that allow us to truly appreciate those like last. if every year was great, then they would all be average!  Lynn and I were talking yesterday and agreed that last week in Colorado was a really wonderful week, not because of the snow conditions, but because we found a way to really enjoy the outdoors and the time in spite of the conditions.

I probably had 20 days on my Ullr's Chariots last year, I didn't need them at all this year.

But you know what, I was still enjoying the skiing.

By the way, we found a "bakery" in Frisco that has great breakfast, great lunch, great milkshakes, and friendly people. I don't remember the name, but it's on the west side of main street near 5th.?  If you can find it, give it a try.

Not every year is an epic year. Have to take the good with the bad and the powder with the slush!

Hoping for a miraculous end to March in Tahoe and Montana and then hoping for some pacific storm dumps in April (especially in Montana). Of course we should all visit Max in Oregon!!

But yes every ski season does come to an end. It try to relish in my great memories and the ways that my skiing has improved. When you focus on that, every end of season is easier to stomach.

Of course there is always Chile!! Ski season is just a couple of months away down there.

One year I want to do en endless winter!! Maybe when my doughtier is in college.

Kathleen and I just today were discussing taking a trip to Chile to ski. Not this year, but perhaps next...

We'll be thinking of you fondly as we enjoy the trees(finally) at Northstar, (among other resorts) now that Tahoe is getting some of the white gold we've been longing for.
Sometimes you just need to let your Bad Self ski!!

Some amazing pictures in Oregon, Tahoe and Arizona :o

You guys are lucky to have the season still going strong. (well not so sure about Arizona's season)

I love it when the tree are laden down by the weight of snow.
Beautiful.

ENJOY the powder.
Envious, I am.

We only have two smallish areas....not much vertical but one of them makes snow so they're good until mid april usually. But with this new blast of 24" they will be plenty good. Soon as I can round up the  offspring....we're off!!

Yup, done here.  Trails are closing daily, and I doubt there'll be much left by the weekend.  The difference between last season and this season was pretty amazing.

Time to break out the paddling gear before all the snowmelt gets to the Atlantic..

stowe is going stronger than any other resort vermont. WE have big soft bumps everywhere. If you can not enjoy that are you really a skier?!

stinks you guys have such a negative attitude towards variable ski conditions. Personally mid season trails can be boring now the woods are gone but we now have a labyrinth of bare patches, chutes, corridors, bumps, and gap jumps to play with on the slopes. Stowe can not groom any more and its skiing as it should be all natural. The skiing on trail is way more fun this time of year because its actually challenging.

I skied Killington and Mt. Snow this week...both were pretty great...I'm a fan of soft snow...doesn't matter what kind, crud, breakable crust, powder, corn, heavy wet stuff--I just like soft snow.   And sunshine doesn't suck either!

However, Josh, I think the initial lamentation here referred to the fact that south of I-90 in the northeast, local skiing has completely melted out.  And that's a fair lamentation, no?

I am supposed to go up to Jay Peak next week...we'll see what's left up there!

I agree completely. WTF is up with the resorts over grooming?

Some people can only ski blue groomers.  ;D

Hey..I resemble that remark...I can ski the hell out of semi-groomed greens.. ;)

Back from two dayer. Got in on some of the 29" of fresh. Not that I was eating up the powder anyway..well maybe eating some. With the smallish resort, by the time we got there, most everything was chopped. Even though the snow was light, with that kind of depth, on moderately steep blues, a fair amount of time I felt like I was getting bullied in the back alley.
Second day was great as some of the runs were "groomed", the snow and weather perfect. Great time, enlightening tho in terms of where I am and where I want to be with my skiing. As evidenced by the fact that "at times" on groomed I felt like a rock star....while in the tracked up deep stuff...a falling rock?  :-X

All in all, great time with the kids and a few friends.
ps: sorry...I obviously have not figured out the insert quote thing..

Bryon

Welcome to the club.
Groomers on just groomed newer snow= hero skier

Same skier on the same trail with pushed up piles of new snow= inadequate skier?

Back to the Essentials/ABCAES2 :D

Can't wait for next season.
