Kevlar Man
« on: July 14, 2008, 01:48:29 pm »
Able to bounce off the mighty Aspen, land incorrectly off moguls and big air hucks....It's our very own ROn.....ta da...Kevlar Man.

Yes, that's right....surgery has been completed, they found a true hernia, not seen until the surgery, made the repair, and installed layers and layers and layers of Kevlar strips in the groin area.  :o

I just spoke with him and he said he has pictures...now how cool is that. He's also feeling well too....a his belly button looks like an Alien crawled into his stomach cavity through it but hey,.......he can keep extra batteries in there for his boots!  >:D

This surgery has NOT affected his desire to purchase more ski gear...sure most of you thought this might slow down his appetite to buy skis and ski clothes....NO, not Kevlar Man.....he's got a hankering for more better and far bound the reach of normal mens gear!

He should be posting here soon I'm sure. It's good to have our good bud on the road to mend!  ;D

Best,
Gary

Oh do I have pictures!  Yes, my surgoen is awesome, he was actaully ling the ab wall further down than normal when he discovred an actual hernia, the term is a direct hernia. It's just above the pubic symphysis. I am feling pretty good, I actuallly have more movement than before and no pain when walking, this is great. I can also feel other leg muscles engaging that weren't before but I never noticed. I am OK to get on recumbent bike tomorrow id I fee up to it.  I will post picts!

Not meant to be sensational or gross, I think these are very interesting, Here are some pics from my surgery. The first group is looking at my right lower abdomen, specifically in the lower region near the pubic symphysis. This is actually a "Direct Hernia' which was not seen my mri nor through two physical exams. Its the circular shaped whitish object near the center of the images. There are shots of the mesh covering. The recovery has been great took Finn for a 3/4 mile walk this Am. I have much greatermovement of my leg including adduction and ability to lift my leg. Another example why you just can't take the first dr.s words for things. My Dr. HAs been great. As an athelete himslef, he really has taken the extra steps for me. He covered a greater area for more protection and is personally seeing me on the follow up. Around here, you don't always see the surgeon but since he understands skiing and sports he knows how important this is to me. If anyone need a great General Surgeon in NJ, let me know!!!

ME? Queasy over those? Are you kidding???
I have seen hernia repairs LIVE!!!!

Had a patient who was trying for a vaginal birth after cesarean with a history of hernia repair after baby #1.
She was tiny and so was her pelvis, so I knew it unlikely she would be successful with a probable 8 lb baby.

Labor went no-where, so we went for repeat c-section with our back up docs. (The midwife always stays during the procedure and for a while after when I was in private practice. I would take pics of the birth, probably the only one to get away with it!!! The staff would never let a husband take pics of the surgical field, even if a baby was the target). Anyway, this lady had multiple visible rips in her abdominal lining. Not the muscle, but the sheath. The Ob did multiple repairs and was tempted to call in a general surgeon to add mesh reinforcement.

I have seen cancerous lesions, bloody cysts, lots of babies. I have assisted at a small number of surgeries in emergent situations.

No Jim, not the least bit queasy. Curious yes, queasy, no.

OH yuck....way too much information...

Hmmm...although.... nice to know that Lynn has at least the visual experience. Maybe we ought to pack some kevlar on Ron's backpack with a sharp knife just if in the event Lynn needs to jump into action.

Oh boy....on the mountain fix....can't get quicker than that....now if only Lynn would carry a flask of whisky...you know....to ease the pain!

the real cause was the original diagnosis of the weakened abdominal walls, AKA Sports hernia, the tear was a contributing factor for sure. Sports hernia is more of a condition than anything else.

Gary:
You forget Midwif's profession and how much pride she showed in describing how good she was at it.  Sharp knife + groin area = circumcision (and I don't think the Kevlar will help with that pain).  Yes, Oh Mountain Men, definitely need the whiskey for disinfectant.

Hey Ron,

Very late to this thread (crazy-busy at work, travel, yada-yada....), but still wanted to say Well Done! Glad that all went well, and good on ya for finding a first-rate surgeon.  Those pictures are fascinating! Very cool.  Like I said months ago, you can learn about nearly everything on this forum, from hernia operations and ED to coffee and...oh yeah...skiing too.

Congrats on a successful outcome...what's the latest? Back to 100%?

today was my 3 week anniversary.  it takes 3 weeks for tissue to heal. I have been working out at home doing  a lot of isometric stuff and starting to work the leg with adduction/abduction and lifting the leg up. Those muscles are pretty weak. I actually start rehab tommorrow. That should be good to get things moving along with supervision and help. I also need to get strecthed out. The muscles are pretty tight. I should be healed completely within another 3-4 weeks. On the mend and gettting stronger everyday!
