Silk undies!
« on: October 24, 2006, 12:24:15 pm »
Let me start by saying my wife, yes my wife absolutley loves her light weight silk long underwear. She likes its wicking and warmth properties, the way it feels and I like the way it looks...(but I won't go there). She likes them so much that between washing and wear the last 3 skis seasons, that looked like they survived a howitzer barrage last day of skiing last year.

Well, when traveling with good friends last year we decided to take those undies and pack them into our friends suitcase when we left? Aspen. Knowing this friend, he probably still has yet to find them...and that's the kind of friend I am.

So...with goodness in my heart and the Winter Silks Catalog that arrived at our house, I began cruising through the catalog to see what kind of goodies they had for me little lady.

It was then I asked myself, "do real men weak silk undies"...now of course I could have asked Ron or Jim since they are the Real Skiers fashion gurus....but thinking of the beating I'd take I decided to go alone.

So...I ordered her a pair tops and bottoms...OK...in Mocha...and ordered myself a pair of black.

Now let me tell, they came the other day and my wife was thrilled I ordered her new silk ski underwear and in the correct size. Her modeling them for me was worth the purchase.

So I opened my pair and noticed how thin and soft they were...actally kind of see through. My wife said..."try them on for me" I said, "no later" ...well,...you guys now...a man must be alone with his new undies...you know to connect.

So later came while she had got into bed and I held them up thinking, send them back, try them on...So what the heck, I tried them on and they fit not to tight but actually very comfortably. My wife even stood up in bed and said "very nice big fella"..(OK I added the big fella)....but what the heck, if my wife says they wick well and make a great base layer, who am I to doubt the wisdom of a woman who's out there skiing with me.

Final testing to be done on my first ski day out but no way, modeling them for anyone.....no Ron, don't ask!

All I can say is that I'm glad I have my own room....

Ok, Silk is good but I have found that good ol' Patagonia Capalene is fantastic stuff. If you need to go a bit heavier, then the Arc' teryx Rho lt pants are incredible as are the tops. I use the Rho tops all the time. I usually wear CW-X tights under my Kjus pants which have a very light but warm insulation.

I'm not so lucky. I think we need a new rule around here, we are not allowed to discuss our wife's underwear!

Cheers,

Michael

Ok Ron...I have the manly Capalene...also known as stinky shirts....and please don't refer to your long johns as tights..

Thank you!

Too bad we don't have moderators that can move this to the XXX discussion thread.

Gary, I am tremendously happy that you and your wife enjoy modeling your silk underwear for each other, and I am sure that Michael and Ron will enjoy a demonstration as well.? ?:o

I actually did try silk long johns some time back.? Didn't feel like they were as warm as others, and I don't remember seeing silk in multiple weights or thicknesses.? But the real thing was that they just didn't seem to wear or wash well.

However, ... as you now know it does have a unique feeeeel against the skin.? I'm sure Ron has tried it as well, he just doesn't want to fess up.

I have honestly and truly never tried them. I actually have no issue with them, its just the semi-creepy/pornagraphic way in which Gary set this thread up!   ;D

Regarding the CW-X's they are tights, they aren't really long johns.  "Long Johns" conjures images of wet stinky cotton corragated looking things. I lived in those as a kid in the winter. We have come a long way. My winter mantra is "cotton is evil"

Now guys, no intentions of pushing this thread into XXX territory...just a moment of self deprecation and mostly silliness.

Yep Jim, they make the silks in 2 or 3 different weights. On some days when the weather is hovering around the 30's, don't need much under the ski pants or jacket thinking that the light weight silks? might fit the bill. You know, come to think of it,...it's like having another pair of skis in the quiver....no clothes caddie necessary! Heck...who needs to wash them anyways!

Ok Mr. Metro Man...tights guy....Yeah I have pair of the CW-X....just a bit too heavy for me and don't like the way they fit around the waist..they should have an elastic band instead of the draw strings.
Still, Long johns preferred over tights.

Oh yeah, no modeling....out of the question....prepost erous....ridiculous ,...well.....could I get a ski pass out of it?

Compression pants

And the discussion morphs.? Tell me more about the CW-X.?

I actually ski with a pair of compression shorts (like you see people wearing under basketball trunks).? For me, they seem to be a tremendous aid in not having sore muscles the next day.? I think it helps circulate the blood and force it up out of the legs so the lactic acid doesn't build up and stay in the muscles (hot tub in the evening contributes more of the same effect).? I had actually considered the CW-X's last year, but didn't want a pair badly enough to pay list price and they never went on sale (and they wouldn't let me demo? >:( ).? But I didn't realize the waist was a drawstring.? I was actually looking at the summer pair (whatever they call them) and figured to either add long-johns (smart wool blend, of course) when I needed more warmth or use the insulated ski pants instead f the shell..

Okay guys, I chime in to let you know that both sexes read the gear forum. ;)
I found the silks in the Winter Silks catalogue to be just okay.It pills easily when washed
You can find silk that is denser, but I prefer the smartwool stuff.

HOw about a picture Gary?

Hey, what do you? think I'm just some ski floozy...

How much for the picture$$$$

Ok, Jim the CW stuff is very snug almost like biking pants and is supposed to help promote circulation and support in critical areas.

They are very warm and tight around the legs and feel very supportive to the knee areas..just feels a bit to restrictive to me...and for sure I hate the draw strings especially after? a 10 degree day, 1 cup of hot chocolate, 1 bottle of water, 2 hours on the snow and a dash to the mens room at lunch time.

Well I own the silks now, they're a must use until they fail totally or my modeling career takes off.

You missed the sale thi ssummer at Sierra, they were dirt cheap!  Anyway, I like them. they are not really intended as being thermal but do work well.  I think what works is that they breath very well. They acan be a bit constrictive but if you pull them up and then cinch the tie, they work great, They are supportive and I also like that feeling.  BTW- following a day of skiing, drinik some CYTOMAX recovery  drink, skip the alchohol for an hour and ride a stationary bike about a half hour after skiing. Ride at a easy pace for a about 15 minutes. It will help to flsuh the system. Of course drink a lot of water.

If you really want to use something that will work, start using Creatine about 4 weeks out. Consult your physician!  It works very well. I also take Arganine/ornathine. 1.5mg/750mg per day.  Google it!

Ok Barry Bonds....

Just read too that 12oz of organic cherry juice after a hard day of skiing really helps in the sore leg department.

The biking is great too Ron.

That "consult a Physician" disclaimer has me nervous.

general disclaimer, The stuff does work but I don't know of any side affects taht may involve cardio or insuline production. If you check out Arginine/Ornathine and creatine on some body building sites you will see what I mean, It does build muscle and add to endurance-recovery. It's all legal and available at any health food store over teh counter. I would just feel terrible if someone took it and then had some health issue.
