Progressor 8+ (2010-11 model)
« on: December 28, 2011, 09:16:56 am »
Skier: female
Age: Hmmm, the truth or not? okay 55
Wt: 120lbs (at least before xmas)
ht 5'4"
Level: strong intermediate. Ski blues/blacks in control.
Off piste; with only fair skills; handle mild/moderate/non icy bumps. All others eat me for breakfast.

I LOVE THESE SKIS!

Stiffer than my previous skis (Head Every Thang)
But not too stiff for my weight/skill/
Edges engage nicely, quicker turns.
More lively than my previous skis.
Handle mild bumps well.
Smooth, no tip flapping, fun!
Works well with PMTS movements.
No detuning of tips done, so I have to keep tipping clean.
Fast feed back if I didn't!

So happy to have these this season.
What little areas of softer snow we found, about 4-5 inches, presented no problems to this ski.
It "floated" just fine. ;)

Thanks to Svend/Terryl for input and direction

Oh man! So glad you like them! Phew! As Terryl and I highly recommended these to you, and felt they would be a great choice for what you were looking for, we were rather apprehensive about how you'd click with these babies.  It's just fantastic that you like them so much.  (Collective sigh of relief....)

As for the clean tipping and kick back, detuning the tips and tails with a gummi stone really helps that.  These skis are pretty torsionally stiff, so aren't very forgiving of slightly imperfect edge changes (not that all your edge changes aren't perfect  ;D ).  Don't be afraid to dull down a couple of inches at both ends.  It won't affect your edge grip, but will make the skis that much more compliant and better mannered.  Much easier to make them go where you point them.  You can always resharpen if you don't like it.

Did you play with the binding position? Terryl skis hers at the "0" mark, and finds them the smoothest and most stable at that position.  Tried them first at +1.5, and they were really squirrelly.

And yes, I would guess they are more lively than the Heads....hope that's OK for you.

What length did you get? Sorry, I can't recall.....

Congrats! And wishing you many fun years on those.

this post make me miss my progressor 9+s i had. such a sweet sweet ski.

it is pretty damn capable off trail, and use to all the time at Snowbird to slow myself down when skiing with people who did not have big mountain boards. I know you can not see the skis but this was on Progressors

I use to ski mine with .5/4 and very light tip detuning.

Howdy Midwife;

I am glad to hear your thoughts on the Progressor 8's.  I bought these skies 2 years ago at Peter's website suggestion.  I have never bought a ski without demoeing.  I am very pleased with this skis performance.  It makes me a believer in realskiers reviews.  Two weeks in Colorado at Aspen (3), Steamboat, Breckenridge, Vail and Keystone, I never saw this ski.  I never see this ski in the Northwest either.  I did demo the Progressor 9's at White Pass, Washington last season.  Great ski!  Fischer alpine skis appear to not be distributed very well.  They have lots of nordic skis out.  I am going for the Progressor 900 at this seasons end.

The fact of the matter is that in our 50-60 day a season skiing,  90% of our skiing is done on hard/groomed surface with occasional off track use.  The Progressor models will do all that an expert skier needs.  The Progressor models will carve as well as any ski I have used in my 30 years experience.

Svend

I am skiing them at the 0 mark.

I am happy to ski them with a full tune. I like the feedback when I am wedging.
Doesn't happen to often these days, but when I do, I am told immediately by the skis.

Pretty sure they are 156cm or there abouts. (bet Jim knows exactly)
I am shorter than Terryl, 5'4," so am a sub 160cm ski fit.

Ray

Glad to hear your feedback. I don't know of any reviews where folks didn't like these skis.
Why even Bushwacka liked skinny Progressor 9's!! :D

Again, my thanks to Svend and Terryl to pointing me in a really good direction!

Wedging?! Gasp! C'est terrible! You need help, STAT!  May I prescribe a new wonder medication? It's called PMTS.....  8) ;)

Seriously, I'm so glad you like them. And regards and congrats from Terryl to you, too.

As for Bushwacker, it seems he officially "outed" himself yesterday, and admitted he owns and likes skinny skis.  Twice.  In the same day.  Amazing! Admission is the first step, BW.  Well done, sir.  If this were group therapy, we would all say "Welcome Josh".  ;D (I'd better duck now....)

Cheers,
Svend

lol I have never denyied owning narrowor skis.

In fact currently I own...

165cm Fisher SL WC
188cm Blizzard GSR WC

I also own a pair of 174cm  8.7 but to be honest I am find that ski quite pointless with my Bushwackers around. I am going to get a pair of the softer supersonics in a 174cm to replace what I do with that ski. I have also owned Progressors 9+ and the Head SS Magunum I liked the 9+ alot better.

Hey Josh -- nice narrow-ski quiver.  Some great skis there.  Let me know how you like the Supersonics.  My wife will be demoing some new hard snow skis this year to replace a pair of aging Supershape Speeds, and Blizzard has a couple that she wants to try -- the Ultrasonic and Supersonic.  Would be good to get your feedback.

Lynn -- did you get much time on your new Ski Logiks when you were in Colorado? Any chance of a review soon?  :)

No, no real time on the Isis'.
I did ski them the first day in Colorado. Which was also the first ski day of the year.
Conditions were hard pack, altitude fatigue and first ski day foot cramps.

Due to lack of softer snow, I decided to not risk dinging them and to wait for the conditions they are meant for..

I Took a CHUNK of the bottom out of my new Progressors on a slightly submerged rock which required a base repair.

Hoping to have better conditions in Utah in 2 wks.
Now that Gary has left, maybe the snow will come. ;) 8)

Lynn
Glad I was able to get an excellent job done on that, at Precision Ski in Frisco.

Lynn,

Really glad you like the new Progressors, and, that  you will continue to be the Real Skiers FSB (Fisher ski babe)! ;D Continue to enjoy and I hope they get a lot of rest when you are in Utah! BTW, what's the plan to keep them nice and sharp? Jimbo get any edge guides and files for Christmas? (I'm being bad).

The Elk demo day is looking ?????  Very little is open. I've got a posse lined up to try to replace skiing with you and Jim, but, we'll see. Weather, stay cold.

LP,

Come join us (Lynn, Jim, me, and the NE PMTS Posse) at Sugarbush the first weekend of February.  See the new Progressors in action ... we'll find all the best ice to test Lynn's tune  ;D  Heavenly hold or skittering sidewalls?  We'll out her tune.

Any other skiers with an interest in PMTS would be most welcome to attend as well.  It's a social skiing event and there will be skiers with a variety of experience and ability.  Details are on the PMTS forum in the Posse section.

Patprof,

If you're still reading this forum, think about heading up to Sugarbush and helping Mike check out Lynn's tune.  The last two years' gatherings have been lots of fun.

Jim,
Anybody, who can adjust Powerrail bindings, can use a dedicated 3 degree edge beveling tool and some diamond files. We don't want the FSB skidding out on some groomed eastern, how do we say this correctly, "hard pack".

@ Todd et al
Negotiations are in progress for a long weekend either in the 'bush or with G at Holimount. Todd, last time we skied in a major downpour, this winter it might just happen again.
