Binding placement on i.Supershapes
« on: December 02, 2006, 04:07:05 pm »
The BOF position at the center of the runining surface produces quite a bit different position from the Center of the Boot line on the edge of the ski.  The mounted plate allows the binding to be moved by unscrewing, not fun on the hill.  What's a good guess of a place to start?

2TECHSKIER:

I faced a similar issue with my i.SL Chips which came with the CP13 carve plate and not the adjustable railflex setup.  I asked JBotti to check with Harald/Diana at a camp he was attending because they have a lot of experience with Head skis, and their response was that they always use Railflex skis in the +15 position (which on my older iC160's and the newer iM77's was very close to BOF/CRS), but that they recommended the factory position on skis with the CP13 plate.  In my case, the default location for the i.SL chips was 15-18 mm behind the BOF location.  I went ahead and used the skis in the default location and haven't regretted it or had any problems with turn initiation or balance.  One of my theories is that the plate better distributes the  pressure, and that as the ski bends the shape of the front of the plate and the rubber bumper underneath actually compresses and exert more pressure forward on the ski than when the ski is not bent.

Also, I haven't read or heard anything by any of the people skiing on SuperShapes indicating that they have done anything other than ski them in the factory default location.

One of my theories is that the plate better distributes the? pressure, and that as the ski bends the shape of the front of the plate and the rubber bumper underneath actually compresses and exert more pressure forward on the ski than when the ski is not bent.

The key difference between the CP plate and the Railflex system is where the reference point is located. The binding position marks on the CP plate are much closer to the running surface midpoint than the Railflex location reference point which is intended to match the boot mid-sole mark. The CP plate does not use the less than ideal mid-sole mark on the boot.

Since the CP plate marks will position the binding toe based on boot sole length and not based on the boot mid-sole mark it tends to provide a more reliable position than the Railflex positioning system. Those marks are much closer to BOF than the mid-sole mark featured on the boot.

Best Regards,

Michael

I think I understand and agree with what you are saying, but still with my i.SL Chips (CP13 plate) my ball of foot mark was still a good 15mm behind the center of running surface.

Lynn, you know if we work hard at this SPAM bumping, we might catch up to Ron and become ...   tadadadada ...

HERO MEMBERS.

Of course, in a couple of months he's going to be brought back down to our level.  We'll all be newbies all over again.

Then we'll never catch up. I don't have much to say about the different quality of skis, boots or bindings. My knowledge of waxing is limited to the human body, not the more important wisdom of ski enhancement.
