Title: sick cheap bike
Post by: bushwacka on June 10, 2012, 06:08:29 am
I personally can not wait till disc brakes become the standard on all higher end bike including road bikes, but for now this looks to be my next cross bike.

for the cost of a zipp wheel you can have a gravel road destroying machine. Honestly the Apex shifts nice, the BB5 road brakes will be switched out to BB7s, and I will build a set of disc wheel based with Ultegra Tubeless wheels.

but really 1000 does not get you much these days.

BW:

Does anyone make 700C tubeless wheels besides Shimano's Dura-Ace and Ultegra. And what for tires?

Who makes the best hubs, and what hubs do you plan to use for your wheel build?

actually i thought you could get the shimano's rims not as a wheelset. which creates a fit problem.

I might just run cross max ST on them since I just ordered 2 pairs of them I am sure a Mountain bike will not mind lending them to this cross bike.

Tires will be hutchison's since they are the only reliable tubeless option for cross bikes.

Jim, I think American Classic and Easton have road wheelsets that are tubeless compatible and should be easy to get your hands on. Even though I have no love for Shimano, their road wheelsets are solid.

Hutchinson is basically the only "tubeless" road tire manufacturer. There are a couple of other "brands" but they are rebadged Hutchinson's.

For road hubs, I have had great success with DT swiss. Well made, very light, roll well, bullet proof and quiet freewheels.

the problem with all mentioned wheelsets is they have non disc mounts on the hubs and have extra weight for rim brakes..

Make no mistake disc brakes are lighter once optimized.

Jim (or anyone):
I recently bought a $700 pair of Shimano WH-7900 C24-TL (tubeless) wheels.  The hubs are supposed to be really smooth and easy rolling.  Any thoughts or opinions?

Recommendations on which Hutchinson tire to consider?
