Title: Mt. Snow news
Post by: Glenn on June 10, 2008, 10:40:53 am
I know a few of you ski in the east.

We received an e-mail from Mt. Snow yesterday stating they're making a fairly big change to the mountain. The entire Carinthia area is going to be one huge terrain park. Some of the features will be taken care of by snow guns/fans, other trails will be left to mother nature.

Obviously, I was pretty excited because I think I'm 17 again and plan on getting a set of twin tip skis. But I was a little bummed because there are some solid cruisers runs over on Carinthia that are nice to ski. On the other hand, it will probably keep a "younger" segment of the skiing and riding demographic confined to one area of the mountain.

Nontheless...intere sting change. I'm really anxious to see how this plan shakes out for the season.

Evidience of the further erosion of skiing to snowboarding and park rats. This and the lack of good snow/snow making conditions are forcing more and more resorts towards turning thier runs into low-cost high volume parks.

A good side effect is the one Glenn mentions, the concentration of boarders to one area, which the rest of us then can avoid! :D

yes, true however, more and more terrain and $ spent on the parks, less spent on the rest.

I here ya Ron....but I think if the resorts want to get families there...they've got to appeal to the WHOLE family.

Still, I wonder with the liability factor and injuries that occur in the terrain parks with the big jumps how long they'll last.

I've been in some ski cross type parks and they're a blast. Still, the trick is to keep bringing people to the mountain and with the cost of fuel, airline tickets and how all commodities are affected, I wonder how the resorts will fare.

For us....Jackson, Whistler, and Steamboat are booked......ya gotta live man...ya gotta!

Agreed but soon, you won't have many runs left. In the poconos, there are places where almost the entire mtn are now parks.  Mountain Creek in NJ is all but a couple runs now. Its cheaper and easier to maintain overall. The appeal isn't really for the family; its for the park rat. Liability, good question, it's been upheld in the courts so far. Skiing and snowboarding are inherently dangerous sports;  That said, will they soon make an adult purchase tickets for minors, that would interesting.

I think it could it work out. You'll have the park for the kids; and they can hand out there. And you have the main mountain for the 'rents or the regular skiers.

I'm real interested to see how this work. I'll certainly get to view both sides of the coin so to speak. I'll be venturing over there to play around in the parks, but I'll also spend a good amount of time on the main mountain.

Yep! The main park was more on the main part of the mountain. They also had a beginer park in more of a beginer area. They also had another park and the 1/2 pipe on Carinthia. Now the entire Carinthia area will be one big park.

OK, that makes sense and will help as Lynn pointed out.

I will admit that I enjoy going thru the parks at times. Like to do the sides of some of the jumps. It is also fun to watch the young'uns go at it for a few minutes. Though am always glad its not MY kid up there doing somersaults in the air.

I'm with you Lynn...I too enjoy some of the jumps, entry level of course...but note how good the snow is in there to play with.

Let's make a point of hitting the park at Steamboat to challenges "flight" mode!

Best,
Gary

Parks are definitly dangerous, my son opened his scalp on one out West requiring stitches and a day off for the concussion.  Yes, he wasn't wearing his helmut that we made him take.  Like Gary Busey, he wears one now.

I'm surprized the parents don't have to buy/sign for tickets already.  But I'm not concerned about the encroachment of snowboarding into skiing, too many relatives do it and there will always be skiing.
