days are getting shorter ... time for bump skiing stoke
« on: August 01, 2013, 06:49:20 pm »
The days are getting shorter and the Loveland snowmaking clock shows only 1 month 25 days 18 hours and 40 minutes until white again begins to cover the mountains.  Pad it with the customary two week delay, and snowmaking is still just around the corner  :)

Take a look at this slow-mo bump skiing video to get yourself drooling for snow.   Personally, I admire his foot work.  What do others see in his skiing?

PS Is Gary or anyone else headed to Portillo this season?  Trip reports ... and spare no details please!

Hi Todd,

Great video! For me, I am blown-away by the skiers ability to flex and absorb the mogul, then do leg extension to keep the skis on the snow in the trough of the bump. Of all the skills advocated to ski bumps, deep flexing is, at least for me, the most difficult body position to get into. Heck, it's demanding to do on dryland: try to lower your butt onto a chair and then stand-back up.

While watching on you-tube, there was a HH video about skiing bump skills using his essentials. Harald stressed flexing, tipping and counter acting the hips, ie turning the hips away from the direction on the turn.

It's still, at least, 4 months before I get to boot-up. But, summer is in decline. Much training to do.

Snow in Colorado!  Lynn was showing me pictures of Telluride and Berthoud Pass.

Fall is feeling closer.

Here's a few more:

Reilly ripping some moguls, short but sweet and a lot going on here!

Berger!    Moguls are all in the last 3 minutes, but, IMHO he's the best technical bump skier out there in the instructional world.  Never gets old.

Ain't no school like the old school...but this is pretty in any generation:

There's just something about bumps--you can't fake it.  Bumps, more so than any terrain, really tell you what sort of a skier you are and what you need to work on!

Yup, the urge to ski is hitting hard.
Jim and I were watching a HH you tube short last night.
Really got the juices flowing
Ready and willing to boot up and try to get those muscles and skis working in harmony again.
Once the leaves are on the ground, it's pretty hard to wait for the intervening weeks for real winter to begin.

Though I will miss biking.
(nope, don't bike in winter; I'm a fair weather biker).

Lynn,

It's looking like good snowmaking weather late next week in the NE if the current pattern evolves as expected.  You could easily be skiing on the east coast before Halloween.  Snow lust is a bona fide disease, so get ready to call in sick sick sick  ;D  I recall that the Kansan is handy at long distance driving, so day trip it up to VT or NH and file a trip report for the rest of us.

Pull out your ski boots tonight and start reacquainting them and your feet.

Remember when Killington was so proud to be first to open last to close???..it's been a long time since I rode in the back of that pick up truck trailer to make turns in the North Glades in October.

I love skiing, but this is prime mountain biking season..I can wait another month and change-"To every thing Turn, Turn Turn" as the Psalm goes (at least according to Roger McGuinn!).

Bumps are the hot video topic this year--every ski forum (pmts, epic, peak skier, and TGR) are full of bump videos and how to videos right now.  Do you think the somewhat lean winters in soecific areas have shifted the focus from Pow 9a rarity) to bumps (a seasonal guarantee) for experts and their expectations??  That's what happened in the last really lean snow decade: The 1980's!  History is so repitious and all that.

Nah, too guilt inducing to do that.  Colleagues left behind suffer too much.
And I hate being on the receiving end of that mantra.

I occasionally have a couple of days off mid-week; maybe a trip north could be worked in.

I know you watch K-Ton and surroundings with your all your senses attuned for any whiff of skiing opportunities.
Keep us posted.

My  "local" spot, Elk Mountain, doesn't usually open til mid-december with man-made.

Going to Colorado the second week in december. That may the first days of skiing.

Though I will take your suggestion and put my boots on prior and get used to.......compressio n, er.....nirvana....w ell, maybe just try to get used to them again.

Cool!  A birthday ski trip to Colorado is always a good idea.  You two have fun ... and remind Jim to ski one year younger  :)

Howdy all....been a great summer with travel and golf....oh yeah...work too!  :-\

Regarding the video...very very talented skier...love his pole plants, solid foot work keeping that uphill ski and boot under his hip, both feet working together...his speed management is above my pay grade but I like how he get's his tips pointed back up hill to scrub speed...

he also creates some great lines with his body...upper lower body separation.  :o

Cold weather here in the Northeast making we drool for snow flakes that will stay attached.

Best to all for a great season...let's get it on! I know Ron's already made turns at Steamboat on some brandy new MX83's...loving them!  :D
