Should I sell the Monster 88's and get the 82?
« on: November 24, 2006, 02:02:35 pm »
I'm going to throw my 88's on ebay tonight. Now that I have the Dynastar Inspired by Nobis, the Monsters look a little redundant. I'm a little worried about the length too, 175cm seems short.

I've seen the 182cm Monster 82 on eBay for about $450 and I should be able to fetch ~$450 for the 88's.

If I can sell the 88's and score the 82, I'll flip the ski. What do you think?

Cheers,

Michael

P.S. JB predicted that something would happen to the 88's? ;)

With the Spats and the Dynastar Inspired, what role would the 82's fill?

If you want another ski, go with the SuperShapes or something that may fill a little bit more of any perceived lack of coverage between the RC slaloms and the Inspireds (if there is a gap in there??).

Or, better yet, since all of your skis are pretty demanding, get something 'all-mountainish' that is more relaxing.  Magfire 10, for example.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the good advice.

I might just try the Inspired and see how versatile it is. A 69 to 72mm waisted ski might serve me better than a midfat. I'm interested in the RX9 & Dynastar Contact 11. Maybe i should just demo...

Cheers,

Michael

Everyone here knows how much I dislike Midfats, but I must admit I am very intrigued by the IM 82's. It just seems like an awesome ski. Now that I have 2 deep powder skis, if I was to add a ski to my quiver it would be the 82's. In the end I don't need them, and I am very well covered with the SS's and the powder skis.

Micheal, I would not blame you for pulling off that trade!! JB.

Hey Michael,
As I see it...you've got the upper end of the ski spectrum covererd with your big boy skis..and you've got the carve em up rip em up end covered with your choice of Fischer WC and RX8's..

Seems that middle ground lacks some coverage.

Now I say this considering your body weight. For me at 154lbs, the RX8's serving my carving need and powder snow up to boot high. With serious snow above the boots, I grab the 82's and get all the float I need.

I'm thinking that good skiers in the 190lbs plus range may actually need the 3rd ski for snow in the knee high range to provide expected performance and? float. Yes, that same ski could provide float for the boot high to knee high, but you give up some quickness and forgivness as well as the ability to ski at slower speeds with control.

Enter a ski like the IM82. The skier that I described above that wants to have MAXIMUM control and perfomrance with each ski for? the conditions may want to add something in that 75 - 82 mm waist. The question and the basis for my point is "AM I A? SKIER THAT WANTS MAXIMUM CONTROL AND PERFORMANCE WITH EACH SKI FOR A SPECIFIC CONDITION"?

I think yours is a good call based on your size, ski skills, and I think desire to have a ski for the conditions that is not a "half ass performer" but a full "I got a pair" tear it up ski!

Both the Contact (9, 10, and 11) and Im 82 could be great choices.  I know you've demoed the 82's. Maybe a Contact demo at the Beav is in order. Length, I'm thinking head high should do it.

Best,
Gary

I think demo is the way to go . There are 3-4 demo shops all walking distance to the slopes at BC, there is one right in our hotel. As much as I love the 82, I think you need to demo. I am of the belief that the SS and the 8 are super versitle ski's but if there are several inches of freshies, then sometimes its just fun to bomb around on a wider ski.  The 82 would be a beter crud ski as it is super stable yet nimble to keep rocking on edge.

Hi Ron & everyone.

Last year I demoed the 88, 77, AC4 & Mantra. The 82 was not available from the Deep Powder House in Alta...

I think selling the 88 is good move now that I have the Inspired. Everything considered, I should demo. Less gear to schlep, the chance to compare a few new models. The only problem is that its hard to find Head & Fischer models at many resorts... but this is B.C./Vail! I'll start searching online.

Cheers,

Michael

Certainly should try the Inspired to see where it excels.

I can see the RX9 might be a great addition to your quiver.

The BC shops do carry Head. I know that Gorsuch does and I think Christy's as well. BEavear Creek Sports, not sure but I know you can demo almost amy brand up there.

Well the 88's didn't sell, but the bindings did! :P!

So, No 82's for mike.

I got these instead; http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=002&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=120057203760&rd=1&rd=1

I know Jim, Ron & Gary will recall that this is my second go around with the Sceneo S500. A year ago I sold a pair of 170's. These were irresistible and the 180cm size is better for western hard snow skiing. The Scenio is an ancestor of the RX8 & RX9. The S500 has a 118-68-100 sidecut and performs like a heavy duty RX8. I had them sent directly to Superior at Snowbird for installation of Look Pivots from my inventory. They also getting the full salon treatment? :D .

I'll either sell the Monster 88's during mid winter or give them to my son. If I keep the 88's I have a color matching pair of Look Pivots that would be sweet.

Cheers,

Michael
